The UKs first zero carbon holiday resort, The Emerald Cornwall, has been awarded a Special Award for water management and low impact building design at the South West Tourism Excellence Awards, held in an award ceremony at The Grand Pier in Weston Super Mare on 12th February 2015. The Awards, organised by South West Tourism in association with Source for Business, covered several different categories and aimed to celebrate the success of the tourism sector in the South West.

The Emerald opened in 2013 and some of their more famous guests have included former James Bond, Sir Roger Moore and his wife. At the time of it’s completion in 2013, four properties at The Emerald made up one quarter of only sixteen properties in the whole country to achieve the highest level of sustainable construction.

The Special Award was sponsored by Source for Business, South West Water’s dedicated service for business customers.

Kate Vain, who presented the Award on behalf of Source for Business, said “As judges one of the joys is to discover a business that is really pushing the boundaries, to see a vision of what the future may look like for the sector, to witness a business that is addressing one of the key issues affecting the sector. The South West has a long record of being at the forefront of tourism’s need to have a positive rather than damaging impact on the beautiful environment we promote. This is equally a concern of South West Water. We were therefore delighted to discover The Emerald, which is at the leading edge of sustainable building design.

As guest expectations increase year on year, it is a constant challenge for the sector to deliver these needs while still reducing use of energy, water and emissions. The Emerald demonstrates what is possible with the latest construction techniques, use of renewable energy and, most importantly for us, rainwater and grey water harvesting systems, as well as the highest specifications of water efficiency. Their investment, both of time and money, is testament to their huge commitment of creating an exemplar.”

Tim and Brigitte Kemp, owners of The Emerald, said “To receive recognition for the work we’ve undertaken in respect of being as sustainable as possible in our use of water and our building construction is greatly appreciated. We are incredibly proud to have received this Award at such a prestigious event and look forward to continuing to fly the flag for green tourism, whilst also providing our guests with a luxury holiday experience.”
